Overview

The military prepares their assault on the Gekko, while Holland rushes back to try and extricate Gekkostate from impending disaster. However, when he shows up without Renton, Eureka takes matters into her own hands and goes out to search for him... just as he returns to the Gekko, looking for her.

Synopsis

The episode opens on the military conducting routine maneuvers. The next scene comes quickly, in the Gekko lounge. Gidget is waxing her lift board while Eureka remembers a soda straw trick she had learned from Renton. She asks Gidget what love is, and the older girl explains what it means.

In the Gekko hangar, Eureka tries to get the Nirvash to move, but it would not move the way she intends, damaging some equipment. She is called off by Moondoggie, who tells her that Holland had gone to Guianas to find Renton. In the next scene she reassures her children that Holland has never broken a promise to her.

On the bridge, Ken-Goh is surprised to learn that Holland is landing early. Holland informs the crew that the UF military, along with Charles and Ray, are surrounding the area; they would be able to escape via a route in page 286 of the Jackson map. After a stinging reminder from Talho about Renton, he visits Eureka's quarters. He and Eureka argue over Holland breaking his word to find Renton. When Holland tells her she's more important than Renton, she runs out of her quarters.

In the next scene, Charles discusses the imminent ambush on the Gekko with the UF fleet commander, Muald Dahl. The freelancer assures the commander that Holland will not pass up this opportunity to escape.

On the Gekko bridge, Holland orders the ship to flee the area. Eureka, with a lift board under her arm, runs to a hatch, and briefly declines Gonzy's offer of tea. She jumps out, and lifts away from the ship just as Renton arrives high above the Gekko. He is brought to the bridge by Matthieu and Stoner, but Holland angrily yells at him. The bridge crew, sans Holland, is impressed with Renton's resolve to see Eureka.

Eureka plans her route to Guianas, as she lifts through colorful clouds. She discovers the approaching fleet (as Ray discovers her), and warns the Gekko of the imminent attack, as the Swan opens fire on her. Ken-Goh determines that the multicolored Rainbow Clouds was serving as a natural trapar field hiding the enemy fleet. Hap confirms that the call was indeed made by Eureka using a handheld communicator. After learning that Eureka is lifting using Gidget's board, Renton runs to the hangar.

Charles launches his Spearhead, and chases Eureka until she breaks her board. She briefly grabs hold of Charles' LFO, but cannot maintain her grip. Charles again chases her in free-fall, and is foiled from capturing her by the timely arrival of Renton and the Nirvash, who rescues her. At the same time, the Gekko opens fire on the fleet from within the cover of the Rainbow Clouds. Charles pursues the Nirvash for Ray's sake, but despite the Spearhead's superior performance, it cannot catch the TypeZERO. Eureka tries to confess her feelings to Renton, who hugs her and expresses relief she is alright. She says that she has wanted to talk to him for a long time and he says the same thing.

After losing Charles in the clouds, Renton engages the enemy KLFs, but does not destroy them, instead severing the arms and weapons from the KLFs' bodies. Eureka places her hands on Renton's, inviting him to "go together" with her as the Amita Drive floods the cockpit with light. A burst of rainbow-colored energy emanates from the Nirvash, and the KLFs caught in its wake lose their armor and weapons; the communications officer on the flagship reports that the reflection film used on the ships and KLFs are being torn off. Commander Dahl quickly orders his fleet to retreat. Holland says that the phenomenon isn't the Seven Swell at all.

As the first ending theme, "Himitsu Kichi", plays in the background and the credits roll, the episode's closing scenes are shown. First, Charles and Ray reluctantly withdraw with the UF fleet. Second, Renton and Eureka begin to make up for lost time by talking to each other. He says that through meeting so many different people, he has found what is most important to him. She says that she found out what is most important to her when she realizes he was gone, and mentions how everyone says she has changed. They say all this while the Gekko crew eavesdrop through the 606's radio (until Hilda severs the connection). Holland, who heard most of this conversation, chuckles in defeat, telling an absent Diane that he knows now what to do. In the final scene, Charles aims his rifle into the distance, saying that he will not give up.

Trivia

  • Although it is not technically a "Kraft Light Fighter", Ken-Goh's radar display registers the 606 as a "KLF".
  • The scene with Eureka bailing out of the Gekko closely mirrors a similar scene involving Renton in "Runaway". Segments of the scene with Eureka lifting to avoid Charles, as well as the scene with her and Renton in the Nirvash cockpit, closely mirror Renton's lifting scene in "Blue Sky Fish". These parallels are shown in the closing visuals of the recap episode "Navigation ray=out".
  • The "to be continued" screen for this episode and subsequent episodes (with some exceptions) is voiced by both Renton and Eureka, as opposed to Renton alone.
  • The scene where Renton catches Eureka from the open cockpit of an LFO bears a strong resemblance to a scene that occurs in episode 2 of Macross/Robotech where Hikaru Ichijyo/Rick Hunter rescues Lynn Minmay from the open cockpit of a VF-1 Valkyrie variable fighter.
  • Due to Charles and Ray not existing in the manga, the ones who penetrated the Gekko were a few SOF soldiers who got data from Eureka and a computer. Then they were going to kill her, but Renton came and saved her.
