Overview

After leaving the Swan, Renton once again wanders around, unable to find a way to return to the Gekko. He collapses in a forest of pile bunkers and is found by William B. Baxter, a hermit living with his wife, Martha, who suffers from Desperation Disease. As he recovers from his weariness, he learns more about nature and about love. Meanwhile, Holland searches for Renton amidst military blockades — until he realizes the Gekko is nearly surrounded.

Synopsis

The episode begins with Renton walking in a foggy "forest" of pile bankers. He narrates that he had been walking for some time, and although he started this part of his journey for Eureka's sake, he is beginning to wonder why he walked so far. He collapses just outside a green clearing in the forest, and passes out as someone approaches him.

Back aboard the Gekko, Eureka tries to converse with a silent Nirvash. Renton awakes in a small cabin, and a talkative stranger named Will Baxter greets him, offering him soup. He introduces his wife, Martha, who is a victim of the Despair Syndrome. He talks to her as if she isn't silent at all, although she seems to be silently fixated on her compac drive. The Gekkostate (minus Eureka and the children) This page lists the characters from the anime and manga series Eureka Seven, covering the characters who are widely considered to be primary to the plot of the story. ... In the field, Holland finds himself hiding from UF patrols aboard Matthieu's 606 (he had damaged the 909 in a crash in "Paradise Lost," and would need the 606's two-seat cockpit to return with Renton). Paradise Lost is the 24th episode of the anime series Eureka Seven. ... Renton, after some more rest, explores the cabin and the surrounding meadow. He sees Will tapping a pile banker with what appears to be a handheld-sized pile banker. He motions Renton over, who finds the vegetable "garden" planted among the tall grass difficult to navigate (Will himself had forgotten some of the crops planted there). Moments after Will hops over to Renton, the pile banker he tapped earlier crashes to the ground—Will had been removing them. A tectonic shift occurs soon after with a loud noise, but the meadow and cabin are undisturbed. Will explains that trying to control the land with force is futile, and the meadow is like grass that springs up quickly despite powerful winds. He says that people mine the Scub for trapar, and erect massive towers because they use far more than what the sun provides. Holland finds Renton's backpack (which is actually Moondoggie's) that was stolen from him in "Crackpot". After talking to some people about a "foxy lady" and a "raccoon-like guy", he realizes that Renton had met Ray and Charles Beams. He retraces his memories of Charles as a fellow lifter and soldier. He pulls out of his reverie in time to avoid detection from another UF patrol. Double-checking his map, he realizes that the Gekko is being surrounded, and hurries back to the carrier. Crackpot is the 22nd episode of the anime series Eureka Seven. ... Over another meal of vegetable soup, Will tells Renton about the Despair Syndrome. He explains that because the people around the patients experience despair, the condition is so called. However, he is not despairing about Martha, therefore she does not suffer from the Despair Syndrome. Will shares about how he met Martha as a soldier, and promised to show her his homeland. He narrates as a series of scenes showing their journey from a large city through barren wasteland is displayed. He recalls how he had told her to leave her compac drive behind, but she could not do it as an engineer. They had found Will's village, but it was abandoned due to tectonic shifts. Shortly after they set foot inside, Martha was "transfixed by the planet". Renton, when Will asks him if there is someone he wants to be with even if the world should end, he sees a vision of Martha smiling at him, and remembers Eureka's smile. Renton quickly begins to leave, and bids the two goodbye. He steps out of the "forest" of pile bankers, and takes to the sky on his lift board as the UF main fleet assembles near Guianas.
